PaperGirl is girls on bikes, handing out Art!

Around the world people have been given a roll of art when they least expect it. Bicyclists are handing out rolls of art to random people, and ask for nothing in return! PaperGirl is spreading around the world like the iPhone. PaperGirl-Albany is in its second year running, and joining forces with New York City for their first round of the project that began in Berlin 5 years ago. Artists from around the world are giving their rollable art to the various PaperGirl projects.

After the art is collected by PaperGirl, the art is shown in an exhibition, and then rolled up and given to random people on the street. PaperGirl puts great stress on the fact that they do not sell any of the art (this project focuses on networking and presenting art in a unique way), and that the art is given to those who least expect it!

PaperGirl-New York is the newly formed expansion of PaperGirl-Albany which hosted its first event in October 2009. This year PaperGirl-Albany is expanding its project to include New York City. 2009 was very successful, and well received in Albany. Last year’s Albany event was exhibited in the St. Joseph’s Cathedral which makes up part of the skyline of the city, and hasn’t held services since 17 years. After the weekend of exhibition, the artwork was rolled up with about 3 pieces of art per roll and given out people on the street by bike.

This year New York State will be hit twice with the excitement of PaperGirl. New York City will be hit first at the Dumbo Art Center from August 23-27, and then again at the Armory in Manhattan from August 28-29. The same art will then be shown at the Marketplace Gallery in Albany from September 3-6, and the art will be distributed in both cities in the week thereafter.
