Spreading out causes our ride to take longer to cross major intersections and MUNI lines. This has been the major concern of the police we’ve been meeting this spring and summer. Plus staying tight helps us establish more of a performance energy.

Around the world people have been given a roll of art when they least expect it. Bicyclists are handing out rolls of art to random people, and ask for nothing in return! PaperGirl is spreading around the world like the iPhone. PaperGirl-Albany is in its second year running, and joining forces with New York City for their first round of the project that began in Berlin 5 years ago. Artists from around the world are giving their rollable art to the various PaperGirl projects.

After the art is collected by PaperGirl, the art is shown in an exhibition, and then rolled up and given to random people on the street. PaperGirl puts great stress on the fact that they do not sell any of the art (this project focuses on networking and presenting art in a unique way), and that the art is given to those who least expect it!

PaperGirl-New York is the newly formed expansion of PaperGirl-Albany which hosted its first event in October 2009. This year PaperGirl-Albany is expanding its project to include New York City. 2009 was very successful, and well received in Albany. Last year’s Albany event was exhibited in the St. Joseph’s Cathedral which makes up part of the skyline of the city, and hasn’t held services since 17 years. After the weekend of exhibition, the artwork was rolled up with about 3 pieces of art per roll and given out people on the street by bike.

This year New York State will be hit twice with the excitement of PaperGirl. New York City will be hit first at the Dumbo Art Center from August 23-27, and then again at the Armory in Manhattan from August 28-29. The same art will then be shown at the Marketplace Gallery in Albany from September 3-6, and the art will be distributed in both cities in the week thereafter.

Dear Campers:

As you may or may not know, I am famous for riding my bike in Heels, which inspired my synchronized bike dance troupe’s name: Heelz on Wheelz. The Ladies at Band of Bicycles, Pleasant Revolution and Heelz on Wheelz would like to test drive these babies.

Send us atleast 3 pairs for immediate consumer reports and hot ladies doing bike dance moves in yellow pumps from the streets of Brooklyn, the alleys of Oakland, and 16 European Cities.

Love,

Larken

c/o Band of Bicycles @ 3rd Ward.195 Morgan Ave.Bklyn.Ny.11237

From Public Blog:

Riding a bike doesn’t mean you can’t wear heels (or boots or flip flops, for that matter). In fact, in Europe, urban cyclists are actually known for setting fashion trends. That’s why we reached out to our friends at Camper, who are known for their stylish, comfortable, and durable walking shoes. Together, we came up with this distinctive peep-toe, perfect for bike riding. Available in bright yellow, these sexy, comfy shoes make a smart and stylish statement, on and off your bike. We recommend these shoes as highly as we recommend the Camper Hotel in Barcelona. It’s where we stay when in Barcelona, and it’s a center for walkers and riders alike

Bring your used kid’s bike to the KIDS BIKE SWAP and swap it for a gently-used bike. All children’s bikes in working order and without gears welcome at the event.

Our main role models for pedal power are the five bands who comprise the Pleasant Revolution. May 20th we hosted them at our Bike Salon at 3rd Ward to put the finishing touches on their mobile pedal powered system and hosted the first ever NYC Bicycle Music Festival, which was played at the amazing Tortialla Factory!

We also had a blast silk screening at Bushwick Print Lab A huge thank you to Tristan and Fredric @ Bike Club Games, (who recently created the Tall Bike Joust iphone application) for assisting with production and editing this amazing video.

The Pleasant Revolution Crew is pedaling through Europe for 6 months and playing shows along the way. Keep up with them at their blog.

We love to work on creative activism projects at 3rd Ward.. Last year we hosted a pedal power workshop with engineers Paul and Leif from Rock the Bike. Together we built a four person pedal powered system. Last summer we bike powered sound systems at Central Park Earth Day and worked to amplify MOBY’s music at the Age of Stupid Film Premiere.

Last night we were working with mechanical engineers from the Green Bus Project as we begin to delve into the second stage of development with our system. We are looking to provide the public with empowering pedal powered experiences. In order for this to manifest we will have to invest in our own highly efficient speaker system and integrate a battery. Send any and all mechanical engineers and speaker sponsors our way!

This is a triple layer swirly cone of simple honest pleasure, as similar to the tantalizing satisfying flavors tasted last night at the amazing, RockinRaw Restaurant on N. 8th Street in Williamsburg. Self described as, “live-vegan-raw-organic-peruvian-new orleanian-creole-cuisine-with soul.” Clinton and I ate in the amazing sparkling back garden and I sipped tea from their hand made earthen ware mugs.

Okay so this is totally different but wildly complex and satisfying at the same time.

There are very few things we enjoy more than our most brilliant friends accomplishing amazing feats of interdisciplinary public art practices. While we were recently upstate visiting Pine Plains we got a chance to meet up with Todd Chandler, a current graduate of RPI who is in residence at Hammertown Community Space working hard and putting the final editing touches onto his film, Floodtide which will be screened for it’s debut performance sometime in the fall. Possibly at the awesome Empire Drive In Installation he is working on with Jeff Stark as a part of the San Jose Biennial in September.

In concert with a live score from Dark Dark Dark watch a jamble of non-linear swirling scenes from the Floodtide experience that make your bike tires want to swirl onto a raft and float somewhere. We will be biking there. Join Us, then lets build a boat. Then a helium balloon and some play structures that create power.
